Among Friends began with a handful of parishioners at St. Paul's Episcopal Church who believed nobody in Newburyport should go hungry. That belief has not changed since 1983.
OUR MISSION
Free meals, freely given, in a room where everyone belongs.
Our mission is to provide free, nutritiously prepared meals in a safe and welcoming environment to anyone in the local community seeking food and fellowship. We ask no questions, require no proof of need, and turn no one away.
Among Friends is the only program in the greater Newburyport area that provides three meals a week, and we have never charged a guest for a single one.
OUR HISTORY
How a church kitchen became a Newburyport institution.
1983
A small group at St. Paul's Episcopal Church starts serving a weekly meal to neighbors in need, cooked in the church kitchen.
1990s
Word spreads. The program expands to a second weekly meal as more neighbors and volunteers get involved.
2000s
Among Friends adds a third weekly meal and formalizes as a dedicated kitchen and dining room, entered from Summer Street.
Today
420 meals a week. 21,800 meals a year. 100% free. Still run by neighbors, for neighbors.
